Wood heating is a viable option to assist regional BASIX compliance. The BASIX tool includes a range of heating options, of which wood heating is one. As of 1 July, 2006, the BASIX calculation has been changed to reflect the improved data on greenhouse emissions from wood heaters.
This results in an improvement to wood heaters' score in BASIX. Wood heaters now score roughly the same as a 4 star gas fixed flued heater.
Although wood heaters are not penalised by BASIX from a greenhouse perspective, it must be remembered that local councils have their own air pollution and health regulations regarding wood heating. The air pollution and heat issues must be resolved with local councils.
For more information or to use the BASIX tool, visit www.basix.nsw.gov.au or phone the
